Rabanastre

Southgate
[For dialogue with the Wandering Viera, see “Side Quests - Viera Rendezvous.”]
Southern Plaza
Imperial: Hard to believe I’ve been here two years already. Heh. I remember when the Rains were a big deal. Now it’s just same-old, same-old.
Muthru Bazaar
Patient Bangaa: We couldn’t reach the deeper parts of the Garamsythe Waterway and it’s put my friend here in the foulest of moods. We weren’t able to make it past this one sluice gate. There’s a moogle what has the key, but he wouldn’t let us use it!
Trader: I set off for the garif village to see about stocking some of their wares. But I got lost on the way and barely made it back. I’ve given up on all that now. Reckon I’ll just stick around here for the time being.
Merchant (blue seeq at top of steps): Spices! Authentic Bancour spices! Whaddaya say? Care for a pinch or two?
Merchant (blindfolded tan bangaa): I may never be a trade baron, but I bring in enough to live as I please. I’ve no complaints.
Traveler: Delightful it may be,  but Rabanastre is not my home. It is time that I returned. What tales I have to tell!
Busy Messenger: You’ve heard there’s a passage connecting the Giza Plains with Ozmone Plain now, right? Boss has me down there surverying for him.
Rabanastran (man in white, yellow, and brown): When I first moved to Rabanastre I couldn’t tell one street from the other. But I think I may finally know my way around now.
Reks’s Friend: You’ve made yourself some good friends along the way, Vaan, but you’ve done it all standin’ on your own two feet. Reks would be proud of ya.
Rabanastran (seeq with turquoise horn): Heard tell there’s a huge, powerful wyrm lurking somewhere in the Westersand - a wyrm unlike the others you’re liable to find there. Think I heard me the cry of the beast once. Or maybe it was only the raging winds of a sandstorm. Regardless, I can’t remember where.

Muthru Bazaar

Basch: The garif are said to dwell in Kerwon.
Balthier: So they do. We'll need to head south, past the Giza Plains.
Basch: It is the Rains now in Giza - the wadis will be swollen with the deluge. Passage may be difficult.
Balthier: But those same waters may also lay open new routes to us.
Ashe: Regardless, we must go south, yes?
Balthier: First things first. You’re eager to be on your way, I know… but we should see that we’re prepared before setting out.
Ashe: I made my resolve two years ago. I swore to overcome any hardship I may face.
Balthier: Man cannot live by resolve alone, princess.
Rabanastran (seeq with turquoise horn): The guards were running about like mad the other day. I heard a rumor that it had something to do with the sinking of the Imperial Fleet. I haven’t heard a word since. What do you suppose happened?
Reks’s Friend: I couldn’t help but overhear – you’re leaving to find the garif? Well, I happen to know the way. You first need to pass through Giza Plains. From Giza, continue south, and you should come to the garif village. Whatever your errand there, good luck.
Rabanastran (man in white, yellow, and brown): The other day I tripped and bumped into an Imperial. Normally I’d count myself lucky to get away with a harsh scolding. But he didn’t even stop to look at me! Just ran off like nothing’d happened. I wonder what was going on to make him act like that?
Busy Messenger: The Rains have come to Giza. You’d be surprised how the land changes if you aren’t expecting it. The boss has me mapping the place out. Hmm, anything useful? Well, the most important thing I found out is that the Rains opened a passage leading to Ozmone Plain.
Headhunter: Hey there. Hear about any juicy marks, boy? I’m looking for the parts what you need to make serpentwyne. Don’t want to be beaten to the punch… least of all by the likes o’ you!
Traveler: Vayne was scheduled to make an inspection of the Bazaar, but it was canceled for some reason. I wonder what could have happened?
Merchant (blindfolded tan bangaa): I thought about stocking wares from the village on Giza Plains, but then I heard it was the Rains – not a soul to be found there.
Rabanastran (woman in pink top and headscarf): The Bazaar is one of the few places in Rabanastre where people can go to let off steam. Can almost forget the constant watch we’re under… Almost.
Merchant (blue seeq): Nanna cheese! Nanna cheese! Interest you in a wheel, m’boy?
Trader: I set off for the garif village to see about stocking some of their wares. But I got lost on the way and barely made it back. I’m fairly sure I had the right directions – south through the Giza Plains, then southwest across Ozmone Plain – but I didn’t get very far.
Merchant (tan seeq at bottom of stairs): Out hunting monsters these days, are you? Better than your old “work” with the Imperials, I suppose, but still dangerous enough. Monsters fight just like me or you – they go after the one they hate the most, first. Like how we might go for a poisonous monster, you know? And there’s nothing monsters hate more than healing. You remember that. It just might come in handy.
Patient Bangaa: My friend here’s in the foulest of moods. “Moogle” this and “sluice gate key” that. He’s goin’ at it  somethin’ fierce.
Troubled Woman: Vaan? I haven’t seen you around the city much these days. What have you been doing? Nothing too dangerous, I hope? I’m sorry… it’s really none of my business. But sometimes I think about Reks, and I get worried for you. Be careful, okay?

Muthru Bazaar

[For dialogue involving Viera/Ktjn, see “Side Quests – Ktjn’s Road to Improvement”.]
Troubled Woman: Oh, Vaan! I’m surprised to see you here. I’d heard you’d been taken by the Imperials… My mistake! What a relief.
Swarthy Bangaa: I used to be a sky pirate m’self. I remember this one time I was deep inside a huge cavern lookin’ for some treasure… Just when I thought I’d found me some loot, out jumps the horriblest monster you ever did see! Get the shivers just thinkin’ on it…
Patient Bangaa: We was just talkin’ about Bhujerba, the skycity. Put my friend here in a foul mood. He can’t abide the fact they’re free of the Empire, gettin’ rich off those magicite mines of theirs.
Merchant (seeq at east side of stairs): Up to your usual “work,” boy? May want to lay off for a time. Vayne’s really tightening the screws on the watch. To be sure, you can bet the Consul’s just trying to keep his men looking all in charge and Imperial, but any pressure on them is pressure on us. Best watch yourself, boy.
Trader: Quite an unusual stone you’ve got there. Don’t think it would be worth much, though. Nah, you best hold onto it.
Rabanastran (woman in pink headscarf): The Bazaar is one of the few places in Rabanastre where people can go to let off steam. Not literally, of course.
Merchant (tan bangaa in blindfold): Sometimes I think I’d enjoy the kind of success Migelo’s achieved, but other times I’m not so sure… Getting jealous looks from the other merchants, worrying about how to keep it all going… I think I’m happy just the way things are.
Traveler: Rabanastre seems so much more cultured since Lord Vayne was appointed consul. This city grows more charming by the day!
Headhunter: Don’t be thinking you can just wait around for new bills to be posted. You want to hunt marks, you have to work for it, boy. Earn a name for yourself in your clan. Then you’ll start to see bills for the really notorious marks. Remember that, boy.
Busy Messenger: Hey, I heard you met the boss. I wish that meant the end of my errand-running days, but I know better.
Rabanastran (man in white, yellow and brown): That Moogling is really something! Now that the service is running again, I finally got to give it a try – it’s the way to move about the city! If you haven’t used it yet, there’s an attendant at the entrance to the Bazaar. I’d sure like to thank the moogle who thought of it!
Reks’s Friend: If you feel like you’ve nowhere to turn, talk to your friends. Reks may be gone, but you’re not alone, you hear?
Rabanastran (seeq at top of stairs): Heard tell there’s a huge, powerful wyrm lurking somewhere in the Westersand – a wyrm unlike the others you’re liable to find there. Think I heard me the cry of the beast once. Or maybe it was only the raging winds of a sandstorm. Regardless, I can’t remember where.

Muthru Bazaar

Merchant (tan seeq to side of stairs): Up to your usual “work”, boy? Best not test your luck. The watch may be more lax, but if they bump into a cutpurse… they do it hard, heh.

Trader: I’ve come ‘cross the Estersand to stock up on a few things. Now I hear some beast’s appeared out there attacking desert wayfarers. You defeated the creature? Really? You must be tougher than you look. Well, guess there’s no need to worry about the trip back now, is there.

Rabanastran (woman sitting in Gatsly’s stall): My husband spent almost every last gil we had on a shipment of new goods for the shop, hoping to keep the customers coming. But there’s a creature wandering the desert that’s been keeping traders from getting through to the city. My husband’s been so worried that something will happen to our shipment, he’s practically boarded himself up in the tavern.

Rabanastran (woman in pink and tan with headscarf): The Bazaar is one of the few places in Rabanastre where people can go to let off steam. Hopefully, the new consul won’t do anything to change that.

Traveler: I never imagined Rabanastre to be so delightful! And with Lord Vayne ruling the city, it’s sure to prosper as never before!

Headhunter: I was hunting the Rogue Tomato, but someone else got to it first. Don’t know who, but I’m none too happy ‘bout it.

Busy Messenger: I’m runnin’ an errand for the boss. He works us like dogs, that Montbla – er, boss.

Rabanastran (man in white, yellow and brown): I’ve heard people talking about some easy way to move around the city. You’d think it would be running now that the guard is back to normal…

Patient Bangaa: The parade’s really bringin’ ‘em out, innit? Put my friend here in a foul mood. Says he don’t care to be pushed, pulled, and or pressed.

Troubled Woman: I didn’t go to the ceremony. I just stayed here, thinking about how things used to be…

North End

Conspicuous Bangaa: Ah, so you’ve got your Primer, so you have. Well? What’re you standin’ about out here for? In with ya! Can’t quite recall your face. Are you new? Might want to pay special heed to what the folks inside have to say. Well, are you goin’ in or not?
Okay, let me in.
[See “The Clan Hall” below.]
No, thanks.

The Clan Hall

Monid: What are you lookin’ at? This ain’t no place for children! Him? He’s an exception. His parents were both hunters. And they were friends of mine to boot. That is, until they set out on a hunt for this one most notorious mark… But I’ll avenge them, be sure of it! I’ve been keeping an ear to the ground, listening for any sign of that mark ever since. That’s what this place is all about. A deadly serious business, this, not to be taken lightly, you hear?

Monid (x2): You’ve got much and more to learn, and you can start with this: stay out of my way! I’d as soon kill you as look at you, so don’t be trying my patience.

Bansat: New member, are you? M’ name’s Bansat. I’m a hunter here in Clan Centurio. Pleased to meet ya.

Bansat (x2): Getting the feel for battle? You can never have too much practice.

Clan Member (moogle with green pom-pom watching practice fight): Are you new here, kupo? My advice for you: always be sure to check for the latest bills. Never know when a new one might be posted, kupo. No matter the notice board you check, the bills will be the same. So go to the nearest one, and you’re set, kupo!

Clan Member (woman in pink watching practice fight): So, Tomaj recommended you to the clan, did he? I bet he pretended he didn’t even know about the clan hall. If he had told you where it was, he’d be in trouble. Finding the clan hall is one of the tests to join the clan. Where you go from here is up to you.

Clan Member (man sitting on steps talking to woman): Hmph. You look like you barely know which end of the sword goes in the monster. Don’t do anything to hurt the Clan… or yourself.

Clan Member (green bangaa talking to red bangaa on balcony): What have we here? A newcomer, eh? Montblanc’s the founder of our clan, so be sure to show him the proper respect. Our job’s to travel about accepting hunts from the boards, gathering news about marks that need to be dealt with right away, elite marks, and the like.

Ma’kenroh: A new clan member? Hrgm… I am Ma’kenroh. A pleasure, I’m sure. Unlike our other members, I cannot participate in hunts. My specialty lies in the collection of information. If you have a question about one of your marks, ask. I will tell you what I know.

Ma’kenroh (x2): Hello. How does this day find you? Hunting the Rogue Tomato? Hrgm… Find it in the Dalmasca Estersand. Leave by the east gate, head to the northeast. Now, go. Oh, about your clan rank… When you’ve defeated 2 marks and accumulated 700 clan points, you will gain a rank. Now, go.

Krjn: Yes? What is it you need? I am Krjn, a hunter of Clan Centurio. To know my boundaries did I join the clan. It is a wellspring of information about powerful marks.

Krjn (x2): If you sense danger, be cautious. Flight, too, has its place in battle.

Montblanc: Kupo-po? Yours is a new face! Are you a hunter? Welcome to our clan hall! I’m Montblanc, founder of Clan Centurio. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, kupo! Our clan has a very strict entrance examination. We should begin yours at once… And, you pass. Moogles are quick to make up their minds, kupo.
[You are now a member of Clan Centurio!]
Here in the clan hall you’ll hear about especially dangerous marks you won’t find posted on any board, the moment they rear their ugly heads! Well, I’ll get on with filing the necessary clan membership certificates. I’ll be finished in no time flat, kupo! Kupo! I nearly forgot! Now that you’re a member, you can make purchases from our clan shop in the Muthru Bazaar. Be sure to stop by, kupo! Happy hunting!
Montblanc (x2): How fares the hunt, kupo? All your membership papers are in order, kupo. Allow me to give you this to commemorate your joining the guild! I’ll have a little something for you each time you attain a new clan rank, kupo.
[You obtain 3 potions!]
Keep up the splendid work, kupo!
Kupo-po? I’m sorry, but I don’t have any hunts to tell you about at the moment, kupo.
Montblanc (x3): How fares the hunt, kupo? Kupo-po? I’m sorry, but I don’t have any hunts to tell you about at the moment, kupo.

North End

Clan Watch (previously the Conspicuous Bangaa): Well, what do you think of the clan? A nice enough lot, if you ask me.

???: (This is a sign for Clan Centurio, but only clan members would know it as such.)

Muthru Bazaar

Clan Provisioner (previously the Mysterious Merchant): Heh, heh. Heard the boss gave you the okay. But it’s not that simple, lad. We’ve got strict rules you gotta abide by here. The things I can sell you depend on your clan rank. You want a crack at the good stuff, best raise your rank. I doubt you’ll be disappointed! Didn’t mean to talk yer ear off! Go on and take a look at what we have… for your rank, of course. [shop menu]

Clan Provisioner (x2): Step right up, lad! Let’s see, for your rank, our goods look something like this. Holler if you see something that takes your fancy. [shop menu]

Note: After the initial meeting, the dialogue in the Clan Hall changes depending not on story progression, but on your progression in hunts and clan ranking. The only way story affects what goes on in the Clan Hall is when Montblanc has rewards for boss battles only completed through progressing the story. Clan Hall dialogue and the Clan Primer will therefore be documented in a separate section from here on out.

Muthru Bazaar

Rabanastran (tan bangaa on balcony): I reckon this is one of the best views down into Lowtown you’ll find from the city streets.

Merchant (brown seeq west of base of steps): Heh. Up to your usual “work”, boy? The watch are out in force today – best not to try your luck. You’ll not be picking any pockets from a dungeon, heh.

Merchant (green bangaa at base of steps): Welcome! Welcome to the Muthru Bazaar! Finest goods in all Rabanastre! Deals not to be missed!

Trader: I’ve come across the Estersand to stock up on a few things. Always find the most unusual goods here in the Muthru Bazaar. A merchant’s paradise! Speaking of the Estersand, I’m lucky I made it through when I did. Some red-pated beastie’s been causin’ trouble… I might’ve been killed!

Merchant (blue seeq): Spices! Authentic Bancour spices! Whaddaya say? Care for a pinch or two?

Rabanastran/Gatsly: Business has been slow these days. I’ve been looking for something new to sell – you know, try and turn things around. If I don’t come up with something soon, I may have to close shop. I’ve no time to be worrying about parades and banquets.

Rabanastran (woman in pink and tan): The Imperials give us leave to manage the bazaar with some measure of freedom. It’s in their own interest, really. Without places like this for people to let off steam, tension would boil over onto the streets.

Mysterious Merchant: Heh, heh. Have all sorts of goodies for sale, lad. Hee, hee. But none for you. Hah, hah. Members only, here!

Merchant (brown bangaa in blindfold): Migelo played his hand well. Not everyone is lucky enough to be the provisioner for the Consul’s fete. I’ve got some catchin’ up to do!

Traveler: I never imagined Rabanastre to be so delightful! A bustling center of trade and commerce, with just a hint of the exotic.

Headhunter: Hey there, boy. Got the lowdown on any good marks to be huntin’? Haven’t had a chance to check the board over in the Sandsea today.

Busy Messenger: I’m runnin’ an errand for the boss. Why go straight back, though, when I can take my time? Sometimes I do it just to annoy him, heh.

Rabanastran (man in brown, yellow, and white): I’ve heard mention of some easy way to move around the city, but whatever it is, it’s closed on account of the heavy guard for the ceremony.

Reks’s Friend: Hey there, Vaan. Glad to see you’re all right. You may want to think twice before picking any more Imperial pockets, though. You always were raisin’ some kind o’ trouble. I remember Reks was always fussin’ at you about one thing or the other. Ah, those were the days…

Rabanastran (green-horned tan seeq): Not many Imperials ‘round here: just the way I likes it. Always walkin’ about like their night soil smells better an’ the rest of ours. The Knights of Dalmasca… They knew how to treat a person with respect.

Patient Bangaa: The Imperials’ve sealed off all the gates leadin’ out of the city. It’s put my friend here in a foul mood. He won’t shut up about it.

Swarthy Bangaa: You’d never know it to look at me, but I used to be a sky pirate. I worked and worked, and finally had enough money to buy me a beaten up old airship. Nothin’ up t’ then had put a bigger smile on me face. Ah…

Troubled Woman: I saw you pick the pouch of that Imperial. I won’t judge you for doing what you must, but you’re asking for trouble. Reks would tell you the same.

Muthru Bazaar 706

The Royal City of Rabanastre – Year 706 Old Valendian, Two Years After the Fall of Dalmasca

(The scene changes to a bazaar where a merchant is confronted by two Imperial soldiers.)

Imperial: Huh? What’d you say?

Merchant: Sir, you haven’t paid, and –

Imperial: (grabbing the merchant by the collar) What? Haven’t paid?

Merchant: On second thought, please, sir. Take it. It is a gift.

Imperial 2: Leave the poor sod be. We don’t want trouble today.

Imperial: (letting him go) Your luck, peddler.

(Vaan suddenly comes through, bumping into one of the Imperials as he passes by.)

Vaan: Sorry!

Imperial 2: Watch where you’re going, churl!

Imperial: What? My pouch! It’s gone!

Imperial 2: The boy!

(The two Imperials take off running after Vaan. Their path is blocked by market-goers, particularly a seeq and a bangaa who stops to talk to him.)

Imperial: Get out of the way!

(The crowd doesn’t hear. One of the Imperials throws their hands up.)

(The scene changes again to another part of the city, where Vaan, with the Imperial’s pouch in hand, stops to catch his breath. Suddenly, someone snatches up the pouch.)

Vaan: Hey, that’s mine!

(He turns to see a girl his age holding the pouch, eyebrow raised. Her expression changes to a frown, her hands on her hips.)

Penelo: What do you mean, “yours”? You’ve been stealing again. What happens if they catch you? We need you to be there for us, Vaan. You’re no good to anyone if you’re locked away in a dungeon!

Vaan: Oh, what, am I the leader now? We’re orphans. The first thing you learn is you gotta look out for yourself. C’mon, Penelo. You know it as well as I do… (he turns to see her rifling through the pouch) Hey, you give that back! What do you think you’re doing?

Penelo: I thought this money was the people of Dalmasca’s property. The Imperials stole it from us, so it’s only fair that we take it back. It’s our duty as Dalmascans. Well, wasn’t that what you said?

Vaan: Yeah, but, I never said anything about taking it back from me!

Penelo: This is for that bread you took the other day. Just because I help Migelo out every now and then… it doesn’t mean that you get to eat for free, too, you know.

Vaan: I know that. You think I like living like this?

(The two hear a sound, and a shadow passes over them; they look up to see an airship passing over in the sky above them.)

Vaan: One of these days, I’ll fly an airship of my own. I’ll be a sky pirate, free to go where I will.

Penelo: Well, be careful. You’ll never fly anything if you’re rotting in a dungeon! Oh, Migelo had some errands that need doing. He wanted you to drop by his place. It might be a good idea to lend a hand.
